New skills and occupations in Europe: Challenges and possibilities (25-27 November 2013)

CEPS, Brussels

More than 30 students and researchers participated last November at the 3-day winter school on “New skills and occupations in Europe: Challenges and possibilities’. The event organized with the support of Stockholm University aimed at giving the participants a clear understanding of the role of new skills and new occupations in European labour markets. The first day of the winter school focused on the origins, measurement and solutions of matching skills and occupations in Europe. In particular Vladimir Kvetan, (CEDEFOP) and Michaela Saisana (JRC) have been presented two key approaches for measuring skill demand and supply: the macroeconomic forecasting model and composite indicator models.

The second day focused on measurements of new skills and occupations in Europe with Internet-based data. A specific session was dedicated to the wage indicator project. Kea Tijdens (Amsterdam University) explained the main characteristics of the survey and the most interesting findings that have emerged from the research. Anna Thum (CEPS) and Lucia Kurekova (SGI) focused on methodological aspects of the usage of online job vacancy data and voluntary web-based surveys for the analysis of micro-level labour market dynamics. Poster and paper presentations were made by  students throughout  the whole event. The final half-day of the winter school concentrated  on students’ own work, student Poster sessions and on-the-spot discussions and networking.
