WWF Azerbaijan: contributions to ecosystem sustainability and expectations from COP2

«Holding the COP29 event in our country in 2024 forms important priorities for us. The holding of COP29 in Azerbaijan will further increase the international reputation of our country.»

GreenPen.az reports that Elshad Asgerov, director of the Azerbaijan office of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said this at a press conference organized for journalists on November 5 regarding COP 29. According to E. Asgerov, WWF expected from the COP29 held in Baku following results:

Agreement on a new finance goal to deliver on 1.5oC compatible plans and address climate impacts.

Demonstrable progress towards new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that limit warming to 1.5oC, and ensures a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.

New finance pledges and commitments from countries, especially for adaptation and loss and damage, and delivery of past commitments and pledges.

Political signals of growing international cooperation, demonstrating that confronting climate change is a top global and national priority.

Creation of a Climate and Nature Workstream to implement previous COP decisions recognising the importance of nature to climate action, and to promote alignment with the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Reviewing WWF Azerbaijan’s preparations and expectations for COP29, E. Asgerov noted that the work done in the last 20-25 years has been calculated to play a role in combating climate change and eliminating its consequences, and that they are working on it as an expert group: «Which of the works we have done so far are climate we learn that changes are beneficial for mitigation. Also, our researchers calculate forecasts for the next 10 years by looking at existing plans. We will present information about what we have done and will do at COP29.»

Project coordinator for the “Protection of Caucasian leopards” Kenul Akhmedova spoke about protecting the population of leopards and goitered gazelles. The coordinator of this project Zeinab Seyidova spoke about the reintroduction of the bison in Azerbaijan, carried out jointly with the IDEA Public Association and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

Climate change expert Elana Alizadeh informed about the problems of global climate change and adaptation to them and also about the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

In turn, the communications coordinator for COP29 of the WWF Azerbaijan office Elchin Sardarov spoke about the awareness-raising work carried out by WWF Azerbaijan on climate change and COP29, the preparation and adaptation of materials on the panda.org website on climate change for the social page of WWF Azerbaijan and other information platforms.

A presentation of the research works of Elana Alizadeh “Adaptation to climate change” and Elchin Sardarov “The role of socio-ecological journalism in promoting the ideas of a clean environment and green development, adaptation to global climate change: socio-philosophical analysis” presentations were presented at the scientific conference within the framework of the “Year of Solidarity for the Green World” of the student scientific society of Baku State University, as well as at the international school conference “IB youth Leading the Change COP29” and at the eco-forum “COP29 simulation for children”, suggestions for increasing the awareness of journalists writing on the topic of ecology, climate and energy were addressed at seminars with the participation of environmental organizations and scientific institutes.

At the end of the press conference, the WWF Azerbaijan office team expressed pride that COP29 is being held in Azerbaijan this year and wished everyone involved in its organization and participants success!
